The first record of human habitation in the Ohio River Valley was by people of the Native American Hopewell / Adena Culture, dating back to 900 A.D. or earlier. These people were probably part of a larger culture who built earthern structures along larger rivers in what became the southeastern part of the United States. Many of the structures were disturbed by European settlerment, but some, such as the ones featured here, were preserved and may still be seen in the Upper Ohio River Valley Region.
